i don’t care if it’s a only a joke, please don’t make comments about how someone’s choice of field of study isn’t going to take them anywhere because it can be a great source of stress and your joke won’t help.
also, destroy the idea that we should only pursue dreams if they are likely to give you status in this capitalist piece-of-shit society.
LET ME TELL YOU A STORY:
I know this doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone, but, when i was in high school, i remember i was trying to decide wether i should pursue a career in art or a career in science (more specifically, in biology) i remember that ALL of my classmates were aiming for the typical “seen as important/profitable” careers, like becoming doctors, engineers and/or lawyers, even if they didn’t really want to or were being pushed by their parents to do so.
I also remember very clearly how i was ostracised and underestimated and constantly mocked when i started saying that i wanted to become a graphic designer and pursue a career in that field instead of becoming a biologist. I even had my father do some sort of “intervention” with my family trying to scare me into not doing it saying i would starve to death cause i wouldnt be able to find any jobs and that i would probably be poor if i did so, even if i liked it and that it should only stay a hobby.
Even with all that happening to me, i still did it, i held firm and studied as hard as i could because it was something that i loved and that made me happy, i took a chance in believing what everyone says about what really makes us happy but few actually dare to do it.
Fast forward 5 years later and:
- I am one of the few people from my high school class/promotion that is steadily employed and earning more than some of the ones who were “gonna be rich” cause they studied engineering.
- I am fully economically independent and i pay all my own expenses, live in my own flat with my lovely boyfriend and even have some little extra money every now and then to travel around europe and pamper myself.
- I am 23 years old and i am the one who helps my mother by giving her some money to help pay her expenses, not the other way around.
- My father, who kept constantly saying art wouldn’t take me anywhere, is now broke (even when he is a doctor, which is supposed to be a “safe career”).
And the best part? i get all of this while working everyday in the thing that makes me happy and that i love, not to mention i keep learning new stuff and meeting awesome artists and cool people on a daily basis.
So, next time someone makes a joke about your career decisions, REGARDLESS of how “unimportant” it might sound, just remember doctor seuss:
"Say what you want and do what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind”
Have a nice day
